The Averbuch family is one of the coolest ones I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Even better, now that I’ve had the chance to spend extended time with them, I feel close enough to feel like part of their family. Yael edges it as my favorite, but Shira, Paul, and Gloria aren’t far off the top spot. As the lone male in the pack, Paul has a special place in my heart, and that’s why I jump at the chance to help support a cause that’s very important to me. Yael’s younger sister Shira, former Stanford soccer player, current Coordinator of Partnership Marketing at MLS, and forever badass, is riding in the Cycle For Survival to help raise money for cancer research. I sat down with her to do a quick interview, and find out why she deserves to be the top donation-getter for this awesome race.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Shira and I wear a number of different hats these days. I’m a New Yorker, a young professional (sports marketer to be more specific), a soccer player, a bar hopper, and a student of life. Most of all, and relevant to this conversation, I’m a daughter and a friend.
What’s the cause you’re raising money for?
Cycle for Survival is a fundraising effort in support of rare cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York City).
Why is this cause so near and dear to your heart?
Five years ago, my dad was admitted into the ICU at our local hospital. For ten days (which felt like a century), we had no idea what was wrong and what was going to happen. Thanks to rare cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, they were able to diagnose him with a rare form of lymphoma and establish a plan for treatment. He is healthy today because of his positivity, will to live, our fantastic support system, and because of Memorial Sloan Kettering.
What makes your dad Special to you?
My dad is Special for so many reasons but the single greatest thing about him is his joy. Joy for life– for running, for talking, for eating, for breathing. He infuses the world with love and positivity and with every passing moment we share, I am reminded what it means to live life to the fullest.
If you could only give them one detail, what’s one thing you’d like everyone to know about this fundraiser?
100% of every dollar you give goes directly to cancer research within 6 month’s time.
