It’s a new day, and with it another new feature on The Special Ones: Footwear Friday! Here we’ll highlight new releases, preview upcoming boots, profile new sneakers and more. Whether it’s Lionel Messi’s newest F50 boot, Mesut Özil rocking the latest Balmain sneakers, or even an upcoming streetwear release, this is where you’ll find everything footwear-related.

For this weekend’s hotly anticipated El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, Nike has laced the face of their brand, Cristiano Ronaldo with a new signature boot: The Mercurial Superfly CR7. Over the years, we’ve seen Nike time the release of CR7’s signature boot alongside El Clásico, and they’re sticking with the tried and true formula for this one. While adidas has used the entire neon color palate with their newest Crazylight pack, Nike’s gone the opposite direction, hooking Ronnie up with a classic black and blue silhouette complemented by a shimmering overlay to give it a bit of extra pop.

According to the man himself: “These new boots are well-suited for me because they’re elegant, beautiful, and they really shine in a new and different way. I’ve always liked trying out new boots, new collections, new colors. Obviously it’s a special game against a big team this week, and I’m excited to play in boots that I feel so good in.”

Nike’s VP Global Football Footwear, Max Blau, explains the idea behind the new colorway: “What we’ve done here is create a completely new way to look at black. This boot should set a new bar on-pitch. We knew we wanted to create this shimmering effect on-pitch to really stand out in the sun or under lights, but it took us many iterations to get it right. The idea was inspired by Cristiano. The way he shows up in big matches and really shines, is what makes him the best there is.”

What do you think of CR7’s newest boot? Will you cop or let these shimmer into the shadows? Hit the comments and let us know!
