In honor of the first week of the new Major League Soccer season, this Player of the week goes to Toronto FC’s big target-man, Jozy Altidore. I realize there were multiple great performances by goalkeepers on opening weekend, but seeing that the former Sunderland striker has been through enough ridicule during his stay in the Premier League, the award had to go to him. Two goals might be enough for most strikers, but Altidore also worked incredibly hard for the team, often seen tracking back to the defensive third to put in tackles, and holding up play to create opportunities for his teammates. His tireless off-the-ball running led to both of his goal-scoring opportunities. First, after running onto Giovinco’s pass and clinically slotting home, Jozy then drew the penalty kick, as he chested down a chip pass, and was clipped down. The USMNT striker clinched his performance with a smart paneka down the middle, winning his new club three points to start the new season.
