After a long hiatus, Dre’s Player of the Week is back and in full effect. It would have been easy to give the award to Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a hat trick in their Club World Cup title clinching victory over Kashima Antlers. However, Napoli’s Dries Mertens deserves plaudits for his goal madness over Torino on Sunday.
Dries Mertens scored four goals in a 5-3 victory over Torino. The diminutive striker has been on a tear as he moved into the role left by the departing Gonzalo Higuain. Scoring 14 goals in all competitions this season, the Belgian is looking to surpass his previous career high of 27 goals while he was with PSV in 2012.
