For this weekend’s action, I have made the decision to go with a player of the week. I was leaning towards Antoine Griezmann of Atlético Madrid but had a little debate from @tehdago of @BFD_Podcast saying that QPR’s Charlie Austin’s performance was better. So I spent my Sunday night/morning watching both games, and I decided to stick with my initial thought and give it to the Frenchman.
The attacker has struggled with life at Atlético thus far, only managing to score three goals in 15 games for Diego Simeone’s side. Until the trip to San Mames. The La Liga Champions were struggling as they trailed 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao at the end of the first half. Then, the former Sociedad star found his stride. His first goal was a powerful header that beat the Bilbao’s keeper, Gorka Iraizoz. The second came after a beautiful trap off the bounce and clinically finished past the keeper. In his third goal, he followed up on a loose ball despite the hint of offside (it was pretty obvious actually, but I doubt Antoine will care about that).
If this is the sign of things to come, watch out for Atlético Madrid in the Champions League and La Liga. Their two banks of four are hard to break, and if Griezmann and Mandzukic can continue the scoring, along with Arda Turan and Koke setting them up, El Cholo’s side can make another run towards titles in 2015.
